The Interview of Suman

Could you tell me a bit about your background before coming here?

Before coming to Bangkok, I had always studied at the same school, ILBC International School in Myanmar. They have several branches in cities like Mandalay and Yangon, and I was based at the Yangon campus. So, before joining Westminster College Bangkok, I had never studied anywhere else! I completed my IGCSEs there, but I decided not to continue with A-Levels.

What is your dream future career?

When I was younger, I was really interested in Biology and Chemistry, but over time, I realised that it wasn’t the right choice for me. I didn’t want to follow a traditional office job routine. Instead, I want to build something of my own or something I truly enjoy. I’ve always loved the creative field, especially fashion, so I decided that I want a career that lets me express myself through design.

What’s behind your dream of opening your own fashion business?

I want to be able to express my creativity and have the freedom to develop my own ideas. That’s why I want to start my own business, especially in fashion. Clothes are more than just something we wear because they reflect who we are and how we feel. My goal is to create a brand that is inclusive and allows people to express themselves through what they wear.

I also chose to study Business because I don’t just want to be a designer I want to build something bigger, something that is truly mine. One day, I’d love to have my own runway show and expand my brand internationally. I want it to be for everyone, no matter their age or background.

Do you have any inspiration or role models in your life like someone you look up to?

I don’t have one specific role model, but I really admire people who work hard to achieve their dreams. My parents are a big inspiration to me because they started with very little, but through determination and perseverance, they built a life they are proud of. That motivates me to work towards my own goals.

Will you start working immediately after graduating?

Not straight away. First, I want to travel and experience different cultures to find inspiration for my business. The first place I want to visit is Italy, and then explore other nearby countries. I’d also love to go backpacking and even hike near Mount Everest in Nepal.

Where do you think you’ll settle when you’re older?

I’d love to live in New York. It seems like the perfect place for someone in the fashion industry, and I think I could really grow there.

Why did you choose this school, Westminster College Bangkok?

I knew I didn’t want to take A-Levels, and this was the only school that offered a Foundation Programme that matched exactly what I needed. It aligned perfectly with my goals. I was also really interested in studying in an environment with teachers from different English-speaking countries, as my previous school only had non-native English teachers. Plus, being in Bangkok means I’m close to home, which is convenient if I ever want to visit. I like this school so much that I even recommended it to my younger sister!

What has your first month of learning here been like?

It was very different from what I expected. The teaching style, the teachers, and the learning atmosphere are all quite new to me. Back home, I was always in my comfort zone, but coming here, I decided to challenge myself. Becoming a brand ambassador has really helped me grow and I’ve taken part in different activities, spoken in front of large groups, and been involved in interviews. All of this has helped prepare me for university life, and I feel like I’ve changed a lot in just a short time.

Have you faced any struggles or difficulties in your studies?

Overall, things have been going quite smoothly. The only real challenge was Data and Statistics when I first arrived, as I had never studied it before. But with support from my teacher, I quickly became more confident with it.

How did you feel when you received your first university offer, especially since you were the first student in this academic year to receive one?

I honestly didn’t expect it! I had just completed my IGCSEs, so it felt unreal to already be getting a university offer. When I received it, I was so excited but also a little nervous and it all felt like it was happening so quickly!

Do you have any advice for new students?

If you choose the Kings University Foundation Programme, the first few days or weeks might feel a little challenging and especially if you’re coming from a very different background. But it’s all part of the journey, and you’ll grow so much from the experience. My advice would be to work hard but also enjoy the opportunities that come your way. This is a time to learn, develop new skills, and prepare for the future and so make the most of it!
